Five different ways!

BTW, if you can’t observe your soul, how do you know it’s separate from the matter it’s made of? No we can’t put it under the figurative microscope, but we can’t yet observe all the laws of nature yet either…

Oy Joe!

I have no clue why you posted a link about how to tie a scarf five different ways.

Whether the soul can be observed is answered variously under different interpretations of what it means to observe something. So we don’t observe the soul as we can and do the rising of the sun. This is because the soul is you. And you cannot observe yourself without losing the very same identity you are trying to observe. I mean that to observe the soul would require that you occupy the vantage point of another soul and thereby acquire a new identity as a result of becoming a new soul with a different perspective on the world and perhaps a different history. And, in nature as we encounter other people, we never comprehend their soul. rather we understand expressions in language that they may use to describe their nature. but usually people talk about objects in space as these seem to be immediately relevant to survival and the welfare of the material body. Not to mention that if you did gain this new perspective, you would, without some memory carried over from your prior consciousness, completely forget about or lack the desire to try and observe and comprehend your previous soul. This doesn’t make very good sense and that is my fault.

I do believe that the soul can be comprehended and that in fact if it could not be so that there could be no such thing as a soul.

This is not to say that there are not alternative theories to the one that I maintain. I want to say that personal identity is a substance, it is a thing. And that that thing is you and it is the substance to which the material world is conveyed in through the senses. Furthermore, this substance to which you are identical, is not material, it is in fact a different kind of stuff altogether.

you ask how I know that my soul is separate from the material world— especially the parts of the material world most closely related to the production of thoughts and other mental states, i.e. the brain.

As the theologian John Hick contends, the position that what some call the soul or self is in fact material is at first glance has the least initial plausibility of the various theories about the relationship between mind and brain. For, thoughts on the one hand and electro-chemical events in the physical brain on the other hand, seem to be realities of quite different kinds.

Anyways, I thank you for posting and hope to hear back from you, Joe.
